ESA State Guide

Everything you need to know about using Education Savings Account funds for educational products, and how to get reimbursed.

What Is an Education Savings Account?

An Education Savings Account (ESA) is a state-administered program that deposits education funds directly into an account controlled by a family. Unlike school vouchers, which pay private school tuition directly, ESA funds can be used to purchase a wide range of educational products and services, including education and learning products, curriculum, tutoring, and online programs.

Not all education choice programs work the same way. There are three types:

  • Education Savings Accounts (ESA), The most flexible. Funds go into a family-controlled spending account. Families can use those funds to purchase from approved vendors and, in many states, get reimbursed for outside purchases. This is what EduChoice USA is designed for.
  • School Vouchers, Funds go directly to a private school for tuition. Families cannot use voucher funds to purchase educational products from a marketplace like EduChoice USA.
  • Tax Credit Scholarships, Corporations or individuals donate to scholarship-granting organizations, which award tuition scholarships. Like vouchers, these go to private schools, not to a family spending account.

EduChoice USA works with families who have true ESA funds, specifically in states where a reimbursement path exists that lets families buy from any approved vendor and get repaid from their ESA balance.

ESA programs are expanding and evolving rapidly across the country. We do our best to keep this guide current, but program details, eligibility, award amounts, and vendor requirements, can change. Always verify the latest information directly with your state's program administrator before making purchasing decisions.
